Concrete Project Idea

1) pupils shall, in pairs, produce invitation cards to home parties

    • produce age-based functional texts
    • develop and apply linguistic basics
    • find and organize information according to the topic of invitation cards
    • use the internet adequately
    • practice the use of a dictionary
    • apply vocabulary according to the different topics of the curriculum (vocabulary about food, clothes, time and place,....)
  • working with the computer:
    • written text on the inside produced in Microsoft Word-program (concrete party program, things to bring, food to prepare, costumes, time and place,...)
    • also available as e-mails to be sent to other members of the class (2 pages)
    • pictures etc taken from the internet (google)
  • time for the project: 4 lessons
    • first lesson: explanation of the project, group formation, teacher shows an example of an invitation card, development of party idea
    • second lesson: writing and production of the text, first looking for pictures
    • third lesson: arrangement of text and pictures in form of an invitation card, sending via e-mail to classmates
    • fourth lesson: pupils present each others invitation cards and talk about the parties they have been invited to
  • there might be a fifth lesson where the whole class has a little party together; everybody has to bring something and to wear a costume
  • choice of media:
    • Microsoft Word shows the language and spelling mistakes
    • looking for pictures on "google" is only possible if the word is spelled correctly
    • usage of the computer and its programs is developed (further) as well as the usage of the internet

remarks: - Do pupils know what an invitation card includes? Do they really understand it?
- perhaps preparation of a blank invitation card (to fill it out)
- maybe more than one lessen for preparation necessary
- invite other persons in, like parents, other classes,....
- How about the copyright licenses of pictures; how do we deal with that?
- technical problems have to be considered (provide a template for the pupils)

    • all profiles are published afterwards on a class page

    • third lesson: every pupils brings a picture of him-/herself, profile sheets are written a second time in a nice and appealing way , photographs are stuck to the specific profiles; designing of a wall newspaper with all profiles (so that pupils of the 5th grade get to know each other)
  • choice of media:
    • based on "normal" phone calls the pupils are used to
    • concentrated way of listening to others and getting information
    • listening and writing down at nearly the same time
